We, as you all know, live in a state where there are more pools than you could shake a stick at so naturally we are worried that our little girl is going to fall in to a pool and no one is around. Not saying that we THINK it is going to happen, but it's a scary 'what if' situation. I have been interested in infant swim lessons since before Temple was born. I could not, for the life of me, imagine a baby learning how to swim. But sure enough, these little monsters are being put through the ringers; dropped straight down into a pool, flipped onto their stomach in the water, everything you can imagine, and they just KNOW how to flip over to their back and float. It's amazing! Here's proof, this is a video we saw on YouTube...
Some people would consider this kind of cruel because the kid looks like he is really not enjoying his swimming lesson experience. I have thought this before as well, not thinking it was cruel but wondering 'Is it safe?' 'Is it worth it?' We decided that we wanted Temple to learn how to swim and we wanted to teach her ourselves. We feel SO much more comfortable than leaving her with a swim instructor that we don't know so we bought a book on the subject and are dedicating 5 days a week to it. It's actually been really fun and Temple is getting more and more comfortable with being in the water.
did you see what the secret is for the baby in the video? I'ts lack of panic. Panic, or perception of fear/death is what keeps us all from accomplishing much. this baby hit the water on the back flip and didn't freak out. It is plain physics that cause the lardy baby to float up, and looking to get the face out of the water is human instinct. Amazing. It can be taught. Wonder just how many things we fail to do or shy away from for fear of "drowning'. Just a thought.....
ReplyDeleteLove you, Gramma
WOW! I had no idea babies could float like that! This is amazing, and soooo smart... especially considering your parents have a pool!
